Spaniard seals championship at MXGP of Australia as Triumph takes manufacturers’ crown
Triumph Factory Racing’s Guillem Farres has been crowned the 2026 FIM MX2 Motocross World Champion after securing the title at the final round of the championship at the MXGP of Australia.
The 23-year-old Spaniard wrapped up his maiden world title with a second-place finish in the opening moto, while teammate Camden McLellan took the race win at the final round.
The championship is a significant milestone for Triumph, with Farres becoming the manufacturer’s first-ever FIM Motocross World Champion. Triumph also secured the MX2 Manufacturers Championship, just three years after entering the class.
Adding to the achievement, McLellan finished second in the final MX2 championship standings, giving Triumph a 1-2 finish in the riders’ championship.
Farres took control of the championship after winning the MXGP of Great Britain in July and never relinquished the series lead. His championship campaign included 14 individual moto wins and six overall Grand Prix victories, including a run of four consecutive GP wins during the middle of the season.
He finished the championship 36 points clear of McLellan and also collected six further overall podium results throughout the season.
“It’s been an unbelievable weekend here in Australia,” Farres said. “We wrapped up the championship in the first race, with Camden taking the win and me finishing second, which was an amazing feeling.”
Farres finished fifth in the second moto to complete the final round, but the result mattered little after the championship had already been secured.
“Overall, it’s been an incredible season and definitely one I’ll remember for the rest of my life,” he added. “Triumph and the whole team have done an amazing job all year. It hasn’t always been easy, but we’ve made the best of every situation, and I’m really happy and proud of what we’ve achieved together.”
McLellan finishes runner-up
McLellan also enjoyed the best season of his MX2 career, winning five Grands Prix and finishing on the overall podium eight times.
The South African won the final two rounds of the championship in China and Australia, finishing the season strongly despite Farres having already secured the title.
“What a year!” McLellan said. “It was another great weekend here in Australia, and I had a lot of fun on the track.”
McLellan’s second place in the championship completes a remarkable season for the Triumph team, which claimed 11 of the 19 Grand Prix victories during the year.
Three years, three championships
Triumph’s MX2 programme has achieved the manufacturers’ championship in only its third season competing at the highest level of motocross.
Team Manager Vincent Bereni said the result was particularly satisfying after the team entered the 2026 season as something of an outsider.
“For me, it’s been a perfect season,” Bereni said. “We won the Manufacturers Championship, finished first and second in the rider standings with Guillem and Camden, and won 11 Grands Prix.”
The team’s consistency was another key factor, with Triumph missing the overall podium at just one Grand Prix all season.
Triumph MXGP & MX2 Team Owner Thierry Chizat-Suzzoni said the achievement resulted from the combined efforts of the factory and race team.
“It is quite simply incredible to have achieved this goal in just three years,” Chizat-Suzzoni said. “Today we are proud to bring this historic title to Triumph.”
Triumph CEO Nick Bloor said the result fulfilled the manufacturer’s ambition of making an immediate impact after entering the motocross world with its TF 250-X.
“To win the FIM MX2 Motocross World Championship, and to also take second place while achieving the FIM MX2 Manufacturers Championship is something we are very proud of,” Bloor said.
The championship-winning TF 250-X has now added an MX2 World Championship to its rapidly growing racing resume, with Triumph achieving the milestone just three years after launching its factory motocross programme.
Farres will now move up to the premier MXGP class with Triumph for 2027, while McLellan will return to MX2 as one of the riders to beat.
Before then, both riders will represent their respective countries at the FIM Motocross of Nations, with Farres lining up for Spain and McLellan representing South Africa.
For Triumph, however, the 2026 MX2 season will go down as a landmark year – a world championship, a manufacturers’ title and a 1-2 finish in the riders’ standings, all achieved in just the third year of the programme.
