Having been vacant just a week ago, more than 5,000 tonnes of loam clay dirt mix have been dumped onto the Showground infield with a handful of earthmoving specialists working together to build a track full of bumps, jumps, berms and obstacles. Mal Cash from Pro Tracks has headed the lengthy task having designed and built Australian Supercross tracks since 2012.

The first truck loads of loam started coming in to the venue on Monday,” explains Cash.

The final track design will be just on 500 metres long, and should give a lap time of between 40 and 50 seconds.

“There will be a long section of whoops, double and triple jumps, berms and rhythm sections, which will give the riders various options and combinations they can try to see which gives the fastest lap time.”

Cash was recommended for the track building job by Jay Marmont and says his inspiration comes from the tracks presented in the AMA Supercross Series in the USA.

A track like this one for the Australian Supercross Championship has to be designed to produce close racing and allow the riders to turn on spectacular action for the crowd,” says Cash, who has been driving heavy equipment and building tracks since his late teens.

“But there also has to be an emphasis on safety, as well, so we will constantly work on the track lay-out and adjust it where necessary on race day. Then on the night, it should just be a case of grooming and maintaining the track, just to keep it in tip-top shape through the racing.”

Tickets are still available for round three of the Australian Supercross Championship but it is recommended you get in fast. It will be a night full of action as the likes of Reardon and Moss face off against the returning Brett Metcalfe, and Jimmy Decotis looks to go three straight.
