It has been an extremely underwhelming and frustrating season for Stewart who has really never recovered from an opening round crash in Anaheim. Suffering from post concussion symptoms the one time champ struggled to find his feet, only finishing one main event all year.

The crashes continued and St. Louis proved the deciding factor after it was revealed Stewart suffered a hairline fracture in his ankle.

James has a hairline fracture in his ankle and he aggravated his back injury from his Daytona crash last week in St. Louis,” said Yoshimura Suzuki Team Manager Mike Webb.

Clearly, he needs time to heal and get ready for Hangtown.”

Stewart wants more than anything to be out there racing but has recognised turning his focus to outdoors will be the best decision not only for himself but for the whole Yoshimura Suzuki team.

“I want to be out there racing,” Stewart said, “My fans and sponsors are important to me, but ultimately I need to focus on getting completely healed-up and be solid and ready to go the next time I roll-up to the starting gate at Hangtown.”

Stewart will now focus on the 2016 Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship, kicking off at Hangtown on May 21st.
